The Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) reclaimed nearly 4,000 square yards of government land in the Sukhrali Johad area on Saturday, ending a 40-year illegal occupation. This demolition drive, supervised by duty magistrate Yatendra Kumar, is part of an intensified campaign to restore public land and improve civic spaces. A heavy police presence ensured the operation was conducted peacefully, utilizing four earthmovers to dismantle illegal structures. Local councillor Anoop Singh highlighted the significance of this action for residents, thanking the mayor and municipal commissioner for their support. Municipal commissioner Pradeep Dahiya announced an administrative approval of approximately ₹1.5 crore (roughly $180,000 USD) for the beautification and development of the johad, a traditional water body essential for drainage and groundwater recharge. The redevelopment process is anticipated to take between six months to a year. Residents welcomed the move, expressing hope that authorities will remain vigilant to prevent future encroachments. Similar initiatives are planned across Gurugram to address illegal occupations.
