On Tuesday, residents of Bavdhan, a locality in Pune, Maharashtra, staged a protest outside the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Kothrud-Bavdhan ward office. They expressed their frustration over the lack of action against illegal encroachments on footpaths and roads, as well as violations by ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants. Abhijeet Deshmukh, a local shopkeeper, highlighted the challenges pedestrians face due to hawkers occupying footpaths, stating that they become aggressive when questioned about their presence. In response, Suhas Mahadev Jadhav, the assistant municipal commissioner, noted that the PMC has taken steps against illegal encroachments, including imposing fines and shutting down three of the six RMC plants. However, he acknowledged that parked vehicles on footpaths continue to pose a significant issue, and emphasized the need for support from Pune Traffic Police for effective enforcement. Kiran Dagade Patil, the area corporator who participated in the protest, criticized the administration for its slow response to repeated complaints and warned of larger protests if the situation does not improve. He urged the PMC and traffic police to enhance enforcement, particularly during evening hours when illegal vending tends to increase.
