The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in India has rolled out tablet-based, one-on-one assessments for Class 3 students as part of the Foundational Learning Study (FLS) 2026. This initiative aims to evaluate students' comprehension, oral reading fluency, and basic mathematics skills, covering over 100,000 students across 10,000 schools in 776 districts. The data collection phase is set to conclude by May-June 2026, with results serving as a mid-term analysis for the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN Bharat), which was launched in July 2021. The assessments are being conducted by around 10,000 trained field investigators from District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) in 20 languages. The use of tablets aims to streamline the data recording process compared to previous assessments that relied on Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets. The findings will help states determine the effectiveness of their educational interventions and inform necessary adjustments for future cycles.
