The Prayagraj district administration in Uttar Pradesh, India, has initiated a crackdown on nearly 200 private schools following increasing complaints from parents regarding unjustified fee hikes and other irregularities. Allegations include arbitrary annual fee increases, frequent changes in textbooks despite stable curricula, and short-term teacher contracts to evade provident fund contributions. In response, the district inspector of schools, PN Singh, has ordered all private schools to provide detailed financial and administrative records, including audited accounts for the past three years and fee structures for the last five years. Schools failing to comply will face strict penalties, starting with a fine of ₹1 lakh for the first violation and escalating to ₹5 lakh for subsequent offenses, with potential cancellation of recognition for repeated breaches. District magistrate Manish Verma emphasized that these actions are intended to safeguard the interests of students and parents, curbing the commercialization of education. A review meeting is scheduled in 15 days to evaluate the submitted documents.
