The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has updated its categorization of districts affected by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme. As of March 27, 2026, only Bijapur in Chhattisgarh and West Singhbhum in Jharkhand are classified as 'LWE Affected Districts', indicating ongoing Naxal violence and the need for heightened security measures. In contrast, Kanker in Chhattisgarh has been identified as a 'District of Concern', where extremist influence persists but is less acute. This classification is crucial for determining the allocation of central funds and security resources to states combating Naxalism. Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the government's efforts, noting the construction of 12,000 kilometers of roads in LWE-affected districts at a cost of ₹20,000 crore (approximately $2.4 billion USD), along with the establishment of banking infrastructure. The MHA's revised list also includes 35 other districts across nine states categorized as 'Legacy & Thrust (L&T) Districts', which require ongoing support to prevent the resurgence of Naxal activities. The MHA reports a notable improvement in the overall LWE situation, reflecting the effectiveness of the National Policy and Action Plan to Address LWE, which was approved in 2015.
