The Uttar Pradesh state government has introduced a new action plan to combat the increasing monkey menace, particularly in Agra, by eliminating the need for specific permission to capture rhesus macaques under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Rajesh Kumar, divisional director of social forestry in Agra, stated that trained specialists will be responsible for capturing and relocating these monkeys to designated forest areas within the district, ensuring that they are not placed in protected sites. The action plan, which was outlined in directives issued on October 16, 2018, mandates that local bodies such as Nagar Nigam, Nagar Palika, and Gram Panchayat engage only trained personnel for this task. Additionally, the initiative emphasizes the importance of local municipal bodies in managing solid waste to reduce food availability for monkeys, thereby minimizing their presence in populated areas. Awareness campaigns will also be launched to educate the public on effective strategies for managing monkey interactions.
