Ghaziabad district in Uttar Pradesh, India, has rolled out 5kg LPG cylinders, commonly referred to as 'Chhotu cylinders', to enhance accessibility for migrants and residents. The district currently has 1.2 million regular LPG connections and 0.35 million piped gas connections. The small cylinders are priced at ₹555 and require a security deposit of ₹968 for new connections. Amit Tiwari, the district supplies officer, emphasized that the initiative aims to cater to those who may struggle with larger cylinders. However, a visit by the Hindustan Times team revealed that the 5kg cylinders were not available at several gas agencies in Raj Nagar, Patel Nagar, Vijay Nagar, and Nandgram, leading to long queues for regular LPG cylinders. Some residents, like Shamshad Ali from Rawli Road, reported successfully obtaining a 5kg cylinder from a Muradnagar agency, expressing relief at the switch from traditional cooking methods that produce smoke. The district supplies officer assured that efforts would be made to ensure availability at all agencies, though he did not disclose the total number of 5kg cylinders available in the district.
