The Election Commission of India has reported the removal of nearly 91 lakh voters from the electoral rolls in West Bengal following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. This deletion represents approximately 8.3% of the state's total electorate. The revision process, which began in November 2022, has led to the deletion of about 63.66 lakh voters, with 27.16 lakh voters removed after judicial scrutiny. Currently, the revised electoral rolls stand at 7.04 crore, including 60.06 lakh voters categorized as 'under adjudication.' A senior official from the Election Commission stated that the electoral rolls are now frozen, and no further inclusions will be permitted at this stage, following the last date for nominations for the first phase of the assembly elections. The first phase will see voting in 152 of the state's 294 seats on April 23, with the second phase rolls being frozen on April 9. Any future changes to the voter list will depend on legal provisions and directives from competent authorities, including the Supreme Court, which is set to hear related matters on April 13.
