The Delhi government has announced plans to replace over 140,000 CCTV cameras sourced from Chinese firm Hikvision, citing security and data concerns. Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma stated that more than 50% of the city's CCTV network, which totals 274,389 cameras, is under review. This decision follows the installation of these cameras during Phase 1 from September 2020 to November 2022. Verma labeled the deployment of Chinese cameras a national security issue, criticizing the previous Aam Aadmi Party government for not considering long-term implications. In response, Aam Aadmi Party president Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned why a nationwide ban on these cameras has not been implemented if they pose a genuine threat. The government plans to replace 50,000 cameras in the first phase, ensuring no disruption in surveillance coverage. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance security standards and may align with new regulations that restrict Chinese surveillance equipment in India.
