Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court submitted his resignation to the President of India on Friday, following a scandal involving the discovery of significant cash at his official residence in Delhi. His resignation letter, which does not elaborate on the reasons for his decision, expresses his deep anguish over the situation. Varma, who took oath on April 5, 2025, is currently facing an in-house inquiry and the possibility of parliamentary removal proceedings due to the allegations against him. This resignation could strip him of the constitutional immunity typically granted to sitting judges, making him vulnerable to criminal charges. The controversy began in March 2025 when stacks of cash were reportedly found at Varma's residence after a fire incident. Following this, he was transferred from the Delhi High Court back to Allahabad, where he was instructed not to undertake any judicial responsibilities. The Lok Sabha Speaker announced a three-member panel to investigate the allegations, and the court even released photographs and videos of the cash found. Varma has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that neither he nor his family stored cash in the storeroom, which was accessible to others.
