The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to release the final electoral rolls for Uttar Pradesh on April 10, 2023, after a five-month Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. This revision aimed to update the voter lists by removing duplicate, deceased, and shifted voters, resulting in the deletion of 28.9 million names from the draft rolls. The total number of voters now stands at 125.5 million, a decrease from 154.4 million previously recorded. This significant reduction is expected to reshape electoral contests across all 403 assembly constituencies in the state, influencing strategies for the upcoming 2027 elections. Political parties, including the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties such as the Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and Congress, have expressed concerns over the deletions. The BJP, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, emphasized that a majority of the missing voters were their supporters. In response, the SP accused the ECI of misusing the process to disenfranchise certain communities. Despite these tensions, the ECI maintained that due process was followed and that political parties were consulted throughout the revision process. The final rolls are anticipated to impact voter turnout and party strategies significantly, as the gender ratio has also declined, with more women voters being removed from the lists than men. The ECI has implemented measures to ensure transparency, including appointing booth-level agents to oversee the process.
