The Maharashtra government has unveiled plans to establish a music institute in honor of the legendary singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away recently. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the institute will be located at Bandra Reclamation in Mumbai and aims to provide world-class music education to emerging talents. The idea for the institute originated from Bhosle herself, and discussions had begun with Ashish Shelar, the cultural affairs minister, to identify a suitable location. This initiative marks the second music institute dedicated to a musical icon in Maharashtra, following the announcement of the Bharat Ratna Lata Dinanath Mangeshkar International College of Music in tribute to Bhosle's sister, Lata Mangeshkar, in January 2022. The Mangeshkar institute, approved for ₹210.5 crore (approximately $25.3 million USD), is set to be built on a 7,000-square-metre plot at the University of Mumbai’s Kalina campus, although its current operational status is unclear.
