During a recent visit to Doha on April 9-10, 2023, India's Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri met with Qatar's Energy Minister Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, where Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to being a reliable energy partner for India. Qatar is crucial for India, supplying approximately 40% of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) needs. Despite recent disruptions in LNG production due to geopolitical tensions, India's energy supply remains stable, largely because gas-based power constitutes only 1.4% of the country's total capacity. To address potential energy demands, India has deferred maintenance on 10 GW of power capacity for three months and has allowed gas-based plants to import LNG for generation. Additionally, the government's push for induction cooking is expected to increase power demand by 13 to 27 GW. India anticipates a capacity addition of 22,361 megawatts by June 2026, including diverse sources such as solar and wind power.
