During the CAPS-IMR Joint Seminar, Air Marshal Umesh Yalla, the Air Officer Commanding in Chief of the Maintenance Command of the Indian Air Force, stressed the necessity for indigenisation in military aerospace manufacturing to lessen reliance on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). He pointed out that the current industry largely depends on licensed manufacturing of foreign designs, which limits India's strategic autonomy. Yalla highlighted the need for indigenous solutions to tackle geopolitical constraints and obsolescence challenges, including developing repair technologies and life extensions beyond OEM specifications. He also discussed the technical challenges faced in indigenisation, such as material availability and the need for quick certification processes. Looking forward, he emphasized the importance of advanced materials, particularly adaptive and smart materials, which could revolutionize aerospace technologies with applications like morphing wings and compact actuation systems. The seminar included notable attendees such as Air Marshal Anil Khosla and Dr. Samir V Kamat from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
