The long-discussed double-decker bus project in Pune is once again under review by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). After several years of stalled progress, the newly appointed chairman and managing director, Mahesh Awhad, has called for a comprehensive feasibility report before any final decisions are made. The review will assess critical factors such as road width, traffic congestion, and overall cost-effectiveness. Previous efforts to launch the project included identifying approximately 40 routes and conducting trial runs, yet implementation has not occurred. Concerns from citizens about Pune's congested roads and infrastructure limitations have led to skepticism regarding the practicality of double-decker buses. Despite the potential benefits of increased passenger capacity and environmentally friendly transport, Awhad insists on a thorough evaluation to ensure the system will genuinely benefit commuters. The project has been discussed since May 2022, but concrete steps towards implementation have yet to materialize.
