West Bengal's Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal announced that about 45% of the six million voters categorized under a 'logical discrepancy' will likely be removed from the electoral rolls before the assembly elections. This deletion will affect approximately 2.7 million voters, particularly in the Muslim-majority districts of Murshidabad and Malda. The electoral rolls were frozen following the nomination deadline for the first phase of elections, which will take place on April 23 and April 29. Voters whose names are deleted will not be able to participate in the elections, although they can appeal their removal to one of the 19 appellate tribunals set up across the state. The Supreme Court has not provided a timeline for when these tribunals will begin functioning. As of now, the total number of names deleted from the rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process stands at 7.62 million. The electoral roll published on February 28 had included 70.46 million voters, and the situation remains fluid as the second phase of nominations is set to close on April 9.
