The controversial 90-degree Railway Overbridge (ROB) in Bhopal's Aishbagh area is set for a redesign after public outcry labeled it a 'death trap in concrete.' The bridge, which cost nearly ₹18 crore (approximately $2.2 million USD) and was completed in June 2025, was never opened due to safety concerns stemming from its sharp turn. Modifications will begin within four to five days, increasing the curve's radius from 2 metres to 2.5 metres and widening the bridge from 8.5 metres to between 10.5 and 11 metres. This redesign aims to ensure safer passage for vehicles, including medium and heavy ones. The issue gained traction online, leading to memes and international attention, prompting a high-level meeting between the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Railways. Seven PWD engineers were suspended, and expert bodies were called in to evaluate the design flaws, which were partly attributed to constraints from a nearby Metro line. After months of bureaucratic delays, authorities have finally reached a resolution, but questions remain about how such a flawed design was approved in the first place.
