India is currently facing supply-side constraints in key pharmaceutical solvents essential for the production of life-saving drugs, largely due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. During an inter-ministerial briefing, Satyaprakash TL highlighted the impact on pharmaceutical supply chains, particularly concerning feedstock and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). To mitigate these issues, the government has slashed customs duties on approximately 40 petrochemical products starting April 1. Additionally, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is coordinating the allocation of critical feedstocks such as propylene, ammonia, and methanol. Methanol supply, in particular, has raised concerns, prompting discussions with Assam Petrochemicals Limited and Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers & Chemicals to enhance availability. Despite these challenges, Satyaprakash reassured that drug prices remain stable and fears of a large-scale drug shortage are exaggerated, with significant monthly consumption levels of 30,000 tonnes of propylene, 12,000 tonnes of ammonia, and 15,000 tonnes of methanol. The situation is anticipated to normalize within a week as efforts to stabilize supply chains continue.
