Amid a two-week ceasefire in West Asia, India is ramping up its energy security efforts, particularly in the Gulf region. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is set to visit Qatar on April 9-10, 2026, while External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on April 11-12. These high-level visits aim to strengthen India's energy ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which are vital suppliers of crude oil and natural gas. India’s hydrocarbon imports from the UAE were valued at $24.74 billion in FY25, with Qatar being the largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The ongoing conflict in West Asia has caused fluctuations in global energy prices, with Brent crude prices soaring from $72.87 a barrel to $119.5 before the ceasefire announcement. The GCC contributes significantly to India's energy supply, accounting for 35% of oil imports and 70% of gas imports, making these diplomatic engagements crucial for maintaining energy security. Additionally, the ministers will discuss the welfare of the Indian diaspora in both countries, with millions of Indians residing in the UAE and Qatar.
