The Indian government is intensifying its focus on compressed biogas (CBG) production amid global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply challenges. Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal announced plans to consolidate various CBG initiatives into a unified program during a conference in New Delhi. This move aims to replicate the success of the ethanol program by streamlining procurement, production, and blending processes. The SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme, initiated in 2018, is part of this effort to create an ecosystem for CBG from waste and biomass. The urgency for this initiative has increased due to disruptions in LNG supplies, particularly affecting imports from Qatar, which constitute nearly 45% of India's LNG sources. In FY25, India imported approximately 27 million tonnes of LNG, valued at $14.9 billion USD. While India produces about 55% of its natural gas domestically, most is allocated for city gas distribution, leaving critical sectors like fertilizers and power reliant on imports. Concurrently, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is visiting Qatar to address these supply issues.
