On Monday, violent protests erupted in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, as factory workers clashed with police while demanding higher wages. The unrest was sparked by a significant wage increase in Gurgaon, Haryana, where workers at a similar company began earning nearly 35% more. This disparity left Noida workers frustrated, particularly unskilled laborers who faced a monthly wage gap of approximately ₹3,907. Workers reported that despite long hours and rising living costs, their wages remained stagnant, with small raises of only ₹280-300 every six months. As the protests escalated, police arrested over 300 individuals, and reports indicated that organized networks were involved in mobilizing the workers. In response to the unrest, the Uttar Pradesh government announced a 21% increase in interim minimum wages for workers in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad, effective from April 1. The new wages for unskilled workers will rise from ₹11,313 to ₹13,690, while semi-skilled and skilled workers will see similar increases.
