Wular Lake, located in North Kashmir, is undergoing a major restoration initiative aimed at reviving its ecological health. Authorities have successfully dredged 78.43 lakh cubic metres of silt from a 5-km stretch and removed 1.31 lakh willow trees, which were detrimental to the lake's ecosystem. This project is part of a broader conservation strategy that includes strengthening protective bunds along 15 km of vulnerable areas to prevent encroachments and flooding. Infrastructure enhancements are also underway, featuring a 2.5-km non-motorable walkway and parks to promote eco-tourism. The total estimated cost for the project is ₹1,600 crore, with ₹200 crore already spent on the first phase. Wular Lake, designated as a Ramsar site in 1990, is crucial for local biodiversity, supporting 60% of the region's fish production and providing habitat for numerous bird species. The restoration efforts began in earnest in May 2020, following the establishment of the Wular Conservation and Management Authority in 2012, and are expected to significantly improve the lake's water quality and ecological balance.
