Major League Baseball (MLB) announced that the percentage of Black players on Opening Day rosters has increased to 6.8% in 2026, marking the first time in over two decades that the percentage has risen for two consecutive years. This figure is up from 6.2% at the start of the 2025 season and 6.0% in 2024. The increase of 0.6% this year is the largest since a 0.7% rise from 2017 to 2018. Historically, the percentage of Black players was 18% when recorded by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at Central Florida since 1991. Notably, 20 of the 64 Black players currently in the league have participated in MLB development programs, such as the MLB Youth Academy and the Hank Aaron Invitational. Among the Black players, 22 are aged 25 or younger, while 8 are over 32, with an average age of 27.8 years compared to the overall average of 29.25 years. Additionally, 17 Black players assigned to the minor leagues were included in the Opening Day 40-man rosters, highlighting the ongoing efforts to promote diversity within the sport.
