Bangladesh is looking to redefine its relationship with India, focusing on strengthening people-to-people ties rather than political affiliations, according to Humayun Kobir, Foreign Affairs Adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. This shift comes in the wake of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, which Kobir claims has lost its influence. The two nations are preparing for a series of high-level discussions, including energy cooperation through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline. Recently, India supplied 5,000 metric tonnes of high-speed diesel to Bangladesh amid an energy crisis exacerbated by regional conflicts. The upcoming visit of Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman is significant as it will be the first at the ministerial level since the political upheaval in Bangladesh in August 2024. Key issues on the agenda include the renewal of the Ganga water treaty, energy cooperation, and addressing border firing incidents involving Bangladeshi civilians. Kobir emphasized the need for regular exchanges to prevent misunderstandings and ensure a productive relationship moving forward.
