Pradeep B J, aged 54, is set to become the first visually impaired Public Relations Officer (PRO) at Kannur University in Kerala, India. He lost 90% of his vision due to retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that gradually impaired his eyesight. Despite this challenge, Pradeep has forged a successful academic and professional path, holding a postgraduate degree in journalism from the University of Kerala and a PG diploma in science and development communication. After years of working in various government departments, he decided to pursue the PRO position, successfully passing the exam with the help of a scribe and various study aids. His wife, Bindu, has been a crucial support throughout his journey, encouraging him during difficult times. Pradeep's appointment not only marks a personal achievement but also reflects a broader commitment to inclusivity, as he aims to improve accessibility for visually impaired individuals in universities across Kerala.
