India is facing a critical shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), largely due to geopolitical tensions affecting supply routes from the Persian Gulf. With 332 million LPG customers, the country is experiencing a 30-fold increase in electric cooktop sales as households seek alternatives. If 10% of households switch to electric cooking, the additional demand could reach 28 gigawatts, nearly a tenth of the summer peak load. This demand surge poses challenges for energy planners, who must balance the needs of local kitchens with the growing artificial intelligence sector. As LPG prices rise, the government is promoting piped natural gas (PNG) as a more stable alternative, given that 65% of LPG is imported. However, the transition is complicated by rising food prices and economic anxiety among workers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration has added over 100 million subsidized LPG customers in the past decade, but energy security remains a concern. With the current LPG supply only sufficient for 17 days, the government faces pressure to ensure affordable cooking fuel while managing the energy demands of the tech industry. Ultimately, India's energy strategy must prioritize the welfare of its 1.4 billion citizens over the export of AI technologies.
