The Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel project in Maharashtra, India, was officially launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. This ambitious project aims to reduce the travel distance from 23 kilometers to 11.84 kilometers, significantly cutting travel time from two hours to just 15 minutes. The project, executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is estimated to cost ₹16,600 crore (roughly $2 billion USD). Two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), named Nayak and Arjun, have been procured to honor the biodiversity of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, under which the tunnels will be constructed. Nayak is the largest single-shield hard rock TBM in India, measuring 86 meters long and weighing 2,500 tonnes. The project will include 10.25 km of twin tunnels and 1.59 km of roads, providing a direct underground link between Ghodbunder Road in Thane and the Western Express Highway in Borivali. Completion is anticipated by May 2028, making it India's longest urban road tunnel and alleviating traffic for the 80,000 vehicles projected daily by 2029.
