With the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections scheduled for 2027, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is intensifying its efforts to engage Dalit voters. On April 14, 2024, the BJP will launch the 'Dr Ambedkar Murti Vikas Yojana' across all assembly constituencies to promote the maintenance and beautification of statues of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and other social justice leaders. The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated ₹403 crore for this initiative, with each constituency receiving ₹1 crore for the development of approximately 10 statues this financial year. The beautification efforts will include installing canopies, boundary walls, and enhancing greenery and lighting around the statues. This initiative is seen as a strategic move to reclaim Dalit support, historically associated with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Additionally, the BJP is nearing completion of the 'Bharat Ratna Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial and Cultural Centre' in Lucknow, which features a 25-foot copper statue and is expected to be completed by July 2026. This project is viewed as a direct challenge to the BSP's legacy in Dalit politics.
