During a press conference, activists, including Swaraj India member Yogendra Yadav and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan, expressed serious concerns about the Special Impediment Removal (SIR) exercise in West Bengal, alleging systemic manipulation of electoral rolls. Yadav highlighted that the exercise is not a routine revision but rather a targeted effort that could lead to large-scale exclusions, particularly affecting minority communities. He presented data showing a 99% match between the adult population and the voter list, yet noted that only 59% of applications for inclusion were accepted. Bhushan criticized the legal basis of the SIR, arguing that it violates established electoral norms and could lead to disenfranchisement. He warned that if voting rights are compromised, it could lead to a broader erosion of citizens' rights. The panel called for judicial intervention to protect the democratic process, stating that the developments in West Bengal could have significant implications for the political landscape across India. The Institute of Development Studies Kolkata president, Dr. Om Prakash Mishra, announced that these concerns would be formally presented to the Supreme Court soon.
