The Maharashtra school education department has revived the Divisional Fee Regulatory Committees (DFRCs) to provide a formal grievance redressal mechanism for parents concerning school fees. A government gazette notification issued on March 18 announced the establishment of four DFRCs in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar divisions. These committees, chaired by retired district judges, will include the respective divisional deputy directors of education as ex-officio member-secretaries. The DFRCs are empowered to adjudicate complaints of unreasonable fee hikes under the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Regulation of Fee) Act, 2011. Parents can file complaints if at least 25% of them object to the fee structure. Anubha Sahai, from the India Wide Parents Association, emphasized the need for the committees to be functional and suggested that individual parents should also be allowed to submit fee complaints, not just groups representing a quarter of the school's parents.
