Shares of Reliance Communications (RCom), a penny stock trading below ₹1, were locked in a 5% upper circuit on April 6, reaching ₹0.90 per share. This surge followed the company's quarterly disclosure regarding defaults on interest payments and loan repayments. The stock has gained 18.42% over the last four days, despite the broader market's volatility. However, RCom continues to struggle with a debt-laden balance sheet and ongoing insolvency proceedings. In February, the Bombay High Court allowed appeals against an interim order that had stayed proceedings against Anil Ambani and RCom. The Supreme Court also ruled that telecom spectrum is a community resource and cannot be treated as an ordinary asset under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). RCom, alongside Aircel and Videocon Telecommunications, entered insolvency between 2018 and 2019, with unpaid statutory dues exceeding ₹40,000 crore. The stock has faced a prolonged decline, losing 50% over the last seven months and previously dropping 69.56% in 2008. Currently, RCom's market capitalization stands at ₹248 crore, with retail investors holding nearly 94% of the company's shares, bearing the brunt of the losses.
