The Indian Ministry of Coal has issued new guidelines aimed at enhancing the efficiency of underground coal gasification projects to produce synthetic gas (syngas). This initiative is designed to optimize the extraction of coal and lignite while minimizing environmental impact. Project proponents are required to submit detailed mining plans that include Geological Reports, Hydrogeological Study Reports, and Pilot Studies. The guidelines emphasize the need for a pilot study conducted by a recognized institution to evaluate the technical feasibility and environmental implications of the gasification process. Additionally, the mining plans must outline the project's location, socio-economic impacts, and a year-wise production calendar for syngas. A comprehensive mine closure plan detailing restoration and long-term monitoring is also mandated. This regulatory framework is part of India's strategy to mitigate risks associated with fossil fuel supply shocks, particularly in light of recent global crises affecting energy supplies.
