The Indian government is preparing to introduce a set of constitutional amendment bills aimed at ensuring 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. This significant move is linked to a nationwide delimitation exercise that will redraw constituency boundaries and expand the Lok Sabha's membership to 815 members, including up to 35 seats for Union Territories. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is expected to present the bills during a special parliamentary session on April 16, 2026. The proposed changes will utilize the latest population data from the 2011 Census, addressing long-standing issues of representation due to population shifts and urbanization. The Delimitation Commission, led by a Supreme Court judge, will oversee the redrawing of constituency boundaries. The women's reservation will only take effect after the completion of this delimitation process and is set to remain in force for 15 years, with seats rotating across constituencies in successive elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of this legislation and urged cooperation from all political parties to bring it to fruition.
