As Assam prepares for elections on April 9, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is shifting its focus from issues of identity politics to youth empowerment and flood mitigation. Information Minister Pijush Hazarika, who is contesting from the Jagiroad Assembly seat, stated that the government has entered a transformative phase aimed at fostering development and prosperity for the youth. He announced that the government has surpassed its 2021 promise of creating one lakh government jobs by delivering 1.65 lakh positions, with a target of exceeding two lakh jobs in the next five years.
Hazarika highlighted initiatives such as the Chief Minister Flight program, which provides financial assistance of ₹1 lakh to youth for skill development, and the establishment of the first Maritime Skill Development Centre in Guwahati. The Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhiyan has also provided over ₹1,000 crore in financial aid to more than one lakh youth, with plans to assist 10 lakh youth in the coming years.
In addition to youth initiatives, the BJP is addressing flood management, with an investment of over ₹18,000 crore earmarked for the Flood-Free Assam Mission. This includes constructing modern embankments and deploying a dedicated flood monitoring force. The party's narrative shift may also be influenced by the younger generation's demand for justice related to the late singer Zubeen Garg, reflecting their concerns and aspirations.
