Basavaraj Bommai, a Member of Parliament and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, has attributed the delays in the Upper Krishna Project (UKP) to the Congress party. Speaking in Bagalkot, he criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for politicizing the issue instead of focusing on legal arguments in the Supreme Court. Bommai pointed out that Phase 1 of the UKP received orders in 1975 under the Congress-led central government, yet it took 14 years to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR). He plans to present comparative data on the project's progress under different governments, asserting that non-Congress administrations have contributed significantly to its implementation. Responding to Congress MLA Basavaraj Rayaraddi's comments about a lack of gazette notification from the Centre, Bommai noted that Rayaraddi often overlooks facts, referencing a prior claim about the Krishna B Scheme's feasibility that contradicted his later actions. The legal matter regarding the project is currently being heard in the Supreme Court, with arguments from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana completed. Once hearings conclude, the tribunal's order will be treated as a Supreme Court decree.
