India's coal imports experienced an 8.5% decline in February 2025, totaling 16.55 million tonnes. This reduction is attributed to a record high stockpile of domestic coal and stable seaborne prices. According to Vinaya Varma, Managing Director and CEO of mjunction services, the weak trend in imports is likely to persist as domestic miners aim to liquidate their stockpiles. In February 2025, non-coking coal imports were 9.80 million tonnes, down from 11.08 million tonnes in February 2024-25, while coking coal imports slightly increased to 3.92 million tonnes. For the April-February period of 2025-26, non-coking coal imports totaled 137.60 million tonnes, a decrease from 152.26 million tonnes in the same period the previous year. Meanwhile, domestic coal production reached 1,047.523 million tonnes, marking a 4.98% growth from the previous year. Current coal inventories at thermal power plants are around 55 million tonnes, sufficient for 24 days of uninterrupted power generation, alleviating concerns over potential shortages as summer demand rises.
