A year after their reintroduction to the wild in England, Eurasian beavers have made a remarkable impact on the local ecosystem in the Purbeck Heaths nature reserve in Dorset. Once extinct in England since the 16th century, these beavers were part of a project led by the National Trust, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and Natural England, which saw two pairs relocated from Scotland. Since their release, the beavers have constructed a 35-meter dam, which has improved habitats for various species, including plants, insects, amphibians, birds, and bats. Additionally, wildlife cameras have documented the beavers interacting playfully with an otter, and sightings of a barn owl, a protected species in the UK, have also been reported nearby. The project aims to release between 10 to 25 adult beavers, with the next release scheduled for this autumn.
