In a significant move to enhance the safety of school commuting in Uttar Pradesh, the transport department will introduce QR codes on school buses and vans. Parents will be able to scan these codes to access crucial information about the vehicle's fitness status, permit validity, and driver details, including their name and license number. This initiative was prompted by recent tragic incidents involving school buses, including the deaths of two young girls due to unsafe vehicle conditions. Prabhat Pandey, the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Enforcement for the Lucknow zone, emphasized that parents have the right to know the condition of the vehicles used by their children. The QR codes will be generated from data uploaded to the Integrated School Vehicle Management (ISVM) portal, which has been operational since April 1. While the initiative is mandatory, current legal limitations prevent penalties for vehicles that do not display the QR codes. The rollout will be phased across all 75 districts, aiming for smooth integration and addressing any technical issues. Ultimately, the system will also include privately operated school transport services once the database is complete.
