In a significant move to aid residents, the Haryana government has announced a waiver on the surcharge for outstanding water bills for households in Gurugram that have functional water meters. This decision, communicated through an official notification, applies to consumers in both colonies and villages under the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) jurisdiction. However, households without water meters are excluded from this benefit and must install meters by May 31, 2026, to avoid potential disconnection of services. The surcharge, which can vary as it is calculated at 10% of the current unpaid bill, has been a burden for many households, leading to accumulated dues. MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya emphasized that the waiver is designed to promote transparency and accountability in water usage, while also encouraging residents to clear their pending bills. The administration aims to streamline water management and improve revenue collection through mandatory meter installations, addressing long-standing challenges of irregular billing and consumption monitoring. Residents are urged to act promptly to install meters, as there is no subsidy for installation costs, which will vary based on plot size.
