Mahaveer Singhvi has officially assumed the role of India's consul general in Toronto, Canada, during a pivotal time for India-Canada relations. With nearly 25 years of experience in the Indian Foreign Service, Singhvi previously served as an additional secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, handling key issues like counter-terrorism and technology. His appointment is seen as crucial for enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including trade and investment, especially following recent diplomatic tensions. The Indian consulate emphasized the importance of this role in rebuilding trust and partnerships between the two nations. Singhvi has expressed his commitment to working closely with Canadian stakeholders and the Indian diaspora to foster mutual trust and collaboration. The two countries are also aiming to ramp up bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030, following agreements on critical minerals and uranium supply during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent visit to India. This comes after strained relations due to allegations involving the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which India has dismissed as unfounded.
