Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia impacting global energy supplies, Oil India Ltd has significantly ramped up crude oil production in Rajasthan's Thar Desert, achieving a record output of 1,202 barrels per day from the Baghewala field. This represents a substantial increase in production, with the company reporting 43,773 metric tonnes of crude oil produced during the financial year 2025-26, compared to 32,787 metric tonnes the previous year. The rise in output is attributed to enhanced operational efficiency and the implementation of advanced extraction techniques, particularly the Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) method, which is essential for extracting thick, high-viscosity crude oil. Oil India has completed CSS operations in 19 wells, marking a 72% increase from the previous year, and has introduced innovative technologies such as fishbone drilling and electric downhole heaters. The Baghewala field, located in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, has been in production since 2017 and is one of India's few onshore heavy oil fields. The advancements in production techniques are expected to support India's goal of reducing dependence on imported crude and enhancing long-term energy security.
