Badruddin Ajmal, the President of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), is gearing up for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, contesting from the Binnakandi constituency. At 74 years old, Ajmal is attempting to recover from a significant defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he lost to Congress candidate Rakibul Hussain by over 10 lakh votes, marking a drastic drop in his vote share to below 20%. Ajmal, who has been influential in Assam's politics, particularly regarding minority issues, founded the non-profit Markazul Ma'arif in 1982 to promote education among underprivileged communities. He has also been a staunch critic of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which he views as a threat to Assam's social fabric. Following the AIUDF's failure to secure any seats in the last Lok Sabha elections, the party is now focusing on rebuilding its presence in the state by contesting independently in the upcoming assembly elections.
