Britain's solar energy generation reached a new record of 14.4GW on Tuesday, surpassing the previous high of 14.1GW set just a day earlier. This achievement was confirmed alongside the government's approval for the Springwell solar farm in Lincolnshire, which is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 180,000 homes annually. This project is part of the government's strategy to boost homegrown low-carbon energy and ensure stability in energy bills. Since taking office in 2024, the Labour government has approved 25 large-scale clean energy projects, collectively capable of powering up to 12.5 million homes. The recent solar milestones follow a record high of 23.9GW in wind power generation, indicating a significant shift towards renewable energy sources. Energy Minister Michael Shanks emphasized the importance of solar energy in achieving energy independence and reducing reliance on international fossil fuel markets. The government is also advancing plans to require solar panels in new homes by 2028.
