On April 8, 2026, a 14-day ceasefire was announced between the U.S. and Iran, leading to increased marine activity near the Strait of Hormuz. Despite this development, ship owners and charterers are looking for clarity on the terms for transiting the strait, as Iran maintains its de-facto control and insists that safe passage will involve its armed forces. The International Maritime Organization's Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, is collaborating with relevant parties to establish a mechanism for ensuring safe transit. Hundreds of vessels remain stranded in the Persian Gulf due to fears of attacks, including approximately 35 ships carrying cargo for India. Among these, 22 energy-critical vessels are marked for evacuation with Indian naval assistance, including three LNG carriers, twelve LPG carriers, and seven crude oil tankers. Recently, eight Indian-flagged LPG carriers successfully crossed the strait and returned to India.
