The Indian government revealed in the Lok Sabha that 43% of the 3,609 trees transplanted for the Central Vista project, costing ₹20,000 crore, have perished. This amounts to 1,545 trees lost after transplantation. In response to a question from Trinamool Congress MP Mohua Moitra, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu stated that 24,450 trees were planted as part of compensatory efforts, with the highest number of transplanted trees coming from the Common Central Secretariat buildings, accounting for 1,734 trees. The government has allocated ₹5.29 crore for these activities over the last three financial years. The Central Vista project, which is nearing completion, has faced significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and legal challenges regarding environmental and land-use clearances. In December 2020, the Supreme Court temporarily halted all construction activities until a final verdict was reached, eventually granting clearance in January 2021.
