Maharashtra's health minister, Prakash Abitkar, announced the rollout of a 'Hub-and-Spoke' model aimed at expanding organ donation and transplant services across the state. This initiative will establish six regional hubs linked to public hospitals, enhancing the capacity to conduct organ transplants and reducing waiting lists. Currently, Maharashtra has only one transplant center in Amravati, with another planned for Nashik. The new model will include key centers in Pune, Thane, Mira-Bhayandar, and Mumbai. Abitkar emphasized the importance of organ donation as a life-giving act, urging the need for improved counseling and support systems for families of brain-dead patients. Dedicated counseling units, trained specialists, and regular workshops will be established to foster a positive environment for organ donation. The initiative also includes bi-monthly reviews of brain-death cases to ensure effective implementation.
