The fee structure for the 2025-26 academic session at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) has ignited a heated debate on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter). The stark contrast in tuition fees, where General category students are charged ₹10,18,480 for eight semesters compared to just ₹2,18,480 for SC/ST students, has drawn criticism. Many users argue that this disparity reflects systemic inequalities, calling the reservation system a 'scam' that unfairly benefits certain groups while disadvantaging others. Some commenters have noted that General category students face extreme cut-off marks in entrance exams, making it difficult for them to secure admission. Furthermore, even after admission, General category students are subjected to significantly higher fees despite receiving the same education and facilities. The issue raises questions about whether all unreserved category students are affluent, as many perceive the fees to be on par with private engineering institutions. As of now, IIT Kanpur has not provided an official statement addressing the concerns raised by the public.
