Two major employee associations of India’s Income Tax Department, the Income Tax Employees Federation (ITEF) and the Income Tax Gazetted Officers’ Association (ITGOA), have warned of a phased agitation starting April 16 if their demands are not addressed. Representing nearly 97% of the department’s workforce, the Joint Council Action (JCA) has cited deteriorating service conditions, including promotion stagnation and excessive workload, as reasons for the protests. In a letter to the Revenue Secretary, the JCA outlined ten key grievances, highlighting the negative impact of unresolved issues on employee morale. The agitation will begin with lunch-hour demonstrations and escalate to a full-day strike on May 13 if the government fails to respond. The associations are also demanding urgent changes to cadre restructuring and recruitment rules, which they argue are essential for improving operational efficiency and career progression within the department.
