A devastating multi-vehicle collision in Katihar district, Bihar, on Saturday evening resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and injuries to 30 others. The accident, which involved a bus, truck, and pickup van, occurred around 6:30 PM on National Highway 31 in the Kodha block. Initial reports indicated seven fatalities, but this number rose as six injured individuals succumbed to their injuries during treatment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh (approximately $2,400 USD) for the families of each deceased victim, along with ₹50,000 (roughly $600 USD) for the injured. Similarly, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also confirmed the same compensation amounts from the state relief fund. The police are investigating the cause of the accident, with initial suspicions pointing to the bus driver losing control of the vehicle. All injured individuals have been transported to a government hospital in Purnea for treatment, and officials are working to identify the deceased.
