Police investigations indicate that the syndicate used Telegram and WhatsApp groups disguised as online gaming platforms to groom and financially exploit potential kidney donors. Victims were initially engaged with small tasks and winnings, which escalated into significant gambling losses, leading them to consider kidney donation as a means to repay debts. Promises of ₹20 lakh to ₹25 lakh (approximately $24,000 to $30,000 USD) were made to entice donors. One identified donor, Ayush Kumar from Begusarai, Bihar, falsely claimed to be a student needing funds for tuition, but investigations revealed he had connections to cybercrime and was under financial pressure from a girlfriend. The police have identified over 50 transplant cases in Kanpur, arresting nine individuals, including doctors and technicians, while several suspects remain at large. Investigators continue to pursue leads, including the examination of a broker's phone records that may provide further insights into the network's operations.
